"A voice is a human gift; it should be cherished and used, to utter fully human speech as possible. Powerlessness and silence go together. Margaret Atwood"
Last week I was honoured to be invited to photograph the 2018 TEDx Melbourne event, I couldn’t let such an opportunity pass so I put my hand up to cover the behind the scenes with speakers, performers and organisers and the media wall.
No, I didn’t hear many talks, instead, I decided to make sure I document what’s happening around me during the presentations. Behind the curtains, there was barely any light but plenty of excitement, nerves, frantic rehearsals and generous support. The speakers were either absorbed in deep conversations -and just imagine what sort of conversations they were, these were world-class revolutionary thinkers after all.
I witnessed the amazing effort it took to pull this event off, dozens of volunteers knowing their roles and solving problems as they come. True friendships were quickly formed and it was a pleasure working alongside them.
Straight after their talks, I would escort the speaker to the media wall where we had just a few minutes to create impactful portraits. No flash photography was allowed but I managed to creatively use the spotlights.
It was a long day of intellectual and creative engagement and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
